Despina Eleftheriou (United Kingdom)

Senior Lecturer in paediatric rheumatology, Institute of Child Health London, United Kingdom Dr. Eleftheriou is a Senior Lecturer on a paediatric and adolescent rheumatology based in the Institute of Child Health, UCL London and Great Ormond Street Hospital. She has developed together as successful academic programme of work dedicated to the developing field of the paediatric vasculitis (biomarker discovery, outcome measures, gene hunting and clinical trials) in concert with a world leading clinical service at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Her clinical background in rare complex inflammatory diseases combined with her PhD studying the pathogenesis of cerebral vasculitis in children provided her with a unique clinician scientist perspective to go on and develop both the academic and clinical programme of work in this area. She currently supervises 5 PhD students and work with a group of researchers that produce publications of an international repute. She plays a significant enabling role furthering paediatric rheumatology translational research in the Arthritis Research UK/NIHR Children's research network Paediatric Rheumatology Clinical Studies Group; this is a crucial strategic means of driving clinical trials and other research in paediatric rheumatology in the UK. Her knowledge transfer achievements include working with patient support groups and contributing to setting up a website for young people with inflammatory diseases and developing a mobile phone app for children with arthritis.
